What is the difference between WiFi and the internet?
Posted on 14 October 2026 by Beaming SupportIf your laptop cannot get online, it is easy to describe the problem as “the WiFi is down”. But WiFi and your internet connection are two different things, and understanding the distinction can help you find the cause.
Your internet connection brings connectivity into your premises. WiFi connects your devices wirelessly to your local network.
What does your broadband connection do?
Your broadband service connects your premises to your internet service provider’s network, allowing you to access websites, cloud applications and other online services.
The connection may use fibre or a combination of fibre and copper, depending on the service available at your location.
Your router connects your local network to that service. Devices can then access the internet through WiFi or a wired Ethernet connection.
What does WiFi do?
WiFi allows laptops, phones and other devices to connect to your local network without a cable.
The wireless connection may come from your router’s built-in WiFi or from separate wireless access points positioned around your premises.
WiFi can also support local communication, such as connecting to a network printer. It does not need a working internet connection for every task.
Can the internet work when WiFi does not?
Yes. Your broadband connection may be working normally while devices struggle to connect over WiFi.
For example, a laptop may lose its wireless connection in a meeting room but work correctly when connected by Ethernet cable. That points towards a wireless coverage or connection issue rather than a broadband fault.
Increasing your broadband speed will not necessarily solve weak WiFi coverage.
Can WiFi work without internet access?
Yes. Your device may connect to the wireless network but be unable to reach the internet.
You might see a message such as “connected, no internet”. This tells you that internet access is unavailable from that device, but it does not identify the cause. The issue could involve the broadband service, router, network settings or the device itself.
What should you check when you cannot get online?
A few observations can help your support team narrow down the problem:
- Try another device. Is the issue affecting one laptop or everyone?
- Try another website or application. A problem with one service does not necessarily mean your connection has failed.
- Move closer to the router or access point. Does the wireless connection improve?
- Try Ethernet, if available. If internet access works through a cable, the wireless connection needs further investigation.
- Note any messages or changes to router lights. Share these with your support team.
If you are testing on a phone, check whether it is using WiFi or has switched to mobile data.

You do not need to diagnose the fault before contacting support. Explaining which devices are affected, where the problem happens and what you have tried gives your support team a useful starting point.
