I’m unable to share SharePoint links with external users

“Your organisation’s policies don’t allow you to share with these users…”

We’ve already published a guide for users of SharePoint to enable the sharing of links with users outside of their own organisation, which can be useful for sharing the progress of a project with clients and other stakeholders.

However, some users still see this error when trying to send links to guests outside of their organisation, despite having enabled sharing in every single place they can think of within Office 365:

“Your organisation’s policies don’t allow you to share with these users…”

If this is the case, try following these steps (or asking an administrator to) to enable the sharing of SharePoint links with users outside of your own organisation.

  1. Download the SharePoint Online Management Shell add-on from Microsoft here: https://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/download/details.aspx?id=35588
  2. Run SharePoint Online Management Shell as Administrator
  3. Log in to your site collection admin:

‘Connect-SPOService -Url https://TenantDomain-admin.sharepoint.com –Credential a**n@tenantdomain.com’

  1. Use this link to enable external sharing with guests:

‘Set-SPOSite -Identity https://tenantdomain.sharepoint.com/sites/****** -SharingCapability ExternalUserAndGuestSharing’

  1. To check this has worked use this:

‘(Get-SPOSite -Identity https://tenantdomain.sharepoint.com/sites/*****).SharingCapability

ExistingExternalUserSharingOnly’
