New Outlook vs Classic Outlook (2026): Which should you choose?
Posted on 31 March 2026 by Beaming SupportFor years, Microsoft Outlook has been the backbone of how we work and communicate. Many users are now finding themselves at a crossroads between two distinct experiences: the modern, streamlined New Outlook and the robust, feature-rich Outlook Classic.
While the New Outlook offers a unified experience across devices and deep AI integration, the Classic version remains right for users who require offline stability and legacy support.
This guide breaks down the key differences to help you decide which version belongs on your desktop.
Currently, there are two versions of Outlook you can have installed on your computer: New Outlook and Outlook Classic.
New Outlook is modern, more lightweight, and features a cleaner interface with stronger Microsoft 365 and Copilot integration. It provides a consistent experience across Windows, Mac, and the web, offering better performance for light-to-medium workloads. However, it lacks support for many advanced features like offline functionality, public folders, and shared mailboxes. It also lacks any support for COM add-ins and PST archives.
Classic Outlook is a full-sized, feature-rich desktop app with full offline support. It is highly customisable and features the familiar interface many organisations still rely on today. Classic also features a traditional Ribbon with more visible controls for complex tasks.
