Help! My broadband is down

Why is my internet not working?

Posted on 22 August 2025 by Beaming Support

We all know that when your internet connection goes down, it can feel like a complete roadblock and leave you unable to work. Here is a straightforward guide to help you quickly diagnose and fix common internet problems.

1: Check the Power and Cables

This is the simplest and most common cause of an outage.

  • First, check that your router is plugged into the wall and switched on.
  • Look for any indicator lights on the front of the router. If they are off, there could be a power issue.
  • Next, ensure that all cables are securely plugged in. A loose or faulty cable between the router and the wall socket or between the router and your computer is a frequent cause of connection loss. If your connection is wired, check for a flashing or solid light on the port where the network cable is plugged in, on both your router and your computer.

2: Reboot Your Router and Devices

If your router has been running for a long time, its performance can slow down. A simple restart can often resolve these issues.

  • Switch off your router, wait for about 30 seconds, then switch it back on.
  • While the router is restarting, do the same for your computer or device.

3: Check for a Network Outage

The problem might not be with your equipment at all.

  • Check our website for any reported service outages in your area. You can typically search by your postcode to see if there is a known issue.

4: Check Your Wi-Fi Connection

If you are using Wi-Fi, there are a few things to consider.

  • Ensure your device is connected to the correct network and that you have entered the password correctly. If you have multiple networks, double-check you haven’t connected to the wrong one.
  • Try moving closer to the router. Obstacles like walls and distance can weaken your signal, leading to a slow or dropped connection.

5: Is It a Problem with Your Computer?

Sometimes, the issue isn’t with the internet connection but with your own computer.

  • If other devices in the office can connect to the internet without a problem, the issue is likely with a single computer.
  • You can run a quick internet speed test to see if your connection is just slow, rather than completely down.
  • Access the task manager and check if your computer is stuck processing a task. Also, if there is only an issue accessing certain pages and applications (e.g Microsoft 365) it may be an issue their end.

6: Contact Your Provider

If you have tried all of these steps and your internet is still not working, it is time to contact your ISP.

However rock-solid your broadband provider unfortunately faults do happen. But at least Beaming customers have the benefit of calling the support team on 0800 027 2656 and getting straight through to a technical expert who is able to help and get you back working as soon as possible.
