7 steps to securing your WiFi Network

Securing your business wireless network

Securing your business wireless network is essential to protect sensitive data, prevent unauthorised access, and comply with industry standards.

Here’s seven steps to securing your WiFi Network

1. Use Strong Encryption

Enable WPA3 if your hardware supports it.

If not, use WPA2 with AES (avoid TKIP and WEP—they’re obsolete and insecure).

2. Set a Complex Password

Use a strong, unique password for your SSID—at least 12–16 characters mixing letters, numbers, and symbols.

Change it regularly and whenever an employee leaves.

3. Hide or Segment Your Network

Use VLANs to separate guest access from internal devices.

Consider setting up a hidden SSID or disabling SSID broadcast (though this isn’t bulletproof, it reduces visibility).

Use a firewall to control communication between segments.

4. Implement Authentication Controls

Integrate with RADIUS / Entra ID / Active Directory for enterprise-grade authentication.

Use MAC address filtering for tight device access control.

5. Manage Hardware Securely

Change default admin usernames & passwords on access points.

Disable WPS (Wi-Fi Protected Setup) to avoid brute-force exploits.

Regularly update firmware on routers and APs.

6. Monitor & Audit Traffic

Deploy network monitoring tools to detect suspicious behaviour.

Enable logging and alerts for failed connections, rogue APs, or spikes in usage.

7. Educate Users

Train employees on safe Wi-Fi practices.

Encourage the use of VPNs when remote access is needed.
