The Security Benefits of Colocation (colo)

Posted on 9 June 2017 by Beaming Support

Colocation (you may have heard it called “colo”) offers many benefits, but with security at the forefront of business owners’ minds we’ve rounded up the ways in which a data centre can offer extra physical security for your servers.

Colocation / colo refers simply to the storing of servers in a location separate from the offices or business premises they serve. Data centres offer storage in a secure, controlled environment. here’s a quick round up of the benefits of colo:

  • 24/7 controlled access at a data centre means you don’t have to pay to set up and maintain the security you’d need for an on-site server room. Only people named on your approved access list are permitted to enter your room, and they can do so whenever they need to.
  • If your servers need to be online all day, every day, you can’t afford for losses of power to affect them. Most colocation facilities have both a battery back-up and diesel powered generators that would start automatically if power were lost.
  • Specialist cooling facilities protect servers in data centres from over-heating.
  • The collocation facility takes care of ISO 27001:2013 certification, taking the stress out of the process for you and ensuring that data is as secure as can be.
