Keys swapped following Windows 10 update/install

Have some of your keyboard keys swapped following an update or installation of Windows 10?

Windows 10 version 1803 has added a new issue with language settings for a lot of users. The keyboard language has changed from its default to English (US), causing keys such as the “ and @ symbols to be reversed.

You should see an icon in the taskbar, usually next to the time and date, that says ENG or a picture of a keyboard. Once clicked, it shows the languages installed with the one currently in use. On this Windows 10 upgrade the US keyboard is the only one installed, (it shows as ENG English United States US Keyboard) so you need to change this.

The easiest way to do this is to trick Windows into displaying in ‘English (UK)’ or your preferred language. This guide applies to English language Windows and won’t necessarily apply to other languages.

To do this, follow the steps below.

Go to the Settings menu and select Time and Language, then Region and Language.

The top option will most likely be English (United States). Click this and select Options.

Then select Add a Keyboard and English QWERTY.

Next you will need to remove the English (United States) option, so the only one left is United Kingdom.

Windows will now apply the English keyboard as default, even though the region is set to US. This is the simplest way to make Windows use the correct keyboard, after 1803 causes this issue.
